Getting Started

Ok, so you want to learn to drive a car or ride a bike, well you’ve just taken a very important step by clicking on to

RIDE ‘N’ DRIVE.

Whether you wish to drive a car or ride a bike, the first step is to obtain a provisional license.

You can apply online for your first provisional licence if you hold a valid UK Passport by clicking here  or by completing the D1 application form that is available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches. You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph

and the fee of £50.00. Send your completed application and payment to

DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD or you may be able to use the premium checking service.

You must be 17 to drive a car or ride a motorcycle, however you can ride a moped (ped) at

16. Licences normally take a couple of weeks to arrive so if you wish to have

your first lesson on your birthday you can apply up to 3 months before.

You also need to check your eyesight. You must be able to read a new-style number plate

from 20 metres.

Before you start your driving or riding lessons it is a good idea to start studying

The Highway Code and preparing for your theory test. The Highway Code, various books
